What is No Cost EMI? The Complete India Guide (2026)

By EasyEMI Editorial · Updated June 2026 · 5 min read

No Cost EMI — the complete explanation

When you buy a product on No Cost EMI: the retailer gives you a discount equal to the interest amount. The bank charges interest on the discounted price. The interest equals the discount — so you pay the original MRP in EMIs with no extra cost. Example: Phone MRP ₹60,000. Bank interest for 6 months at 15% = ₹2,700. Retailer discounts ₹2,700 upfront. You pay ₹60,000 ÷ 6 = ₹10,000/month for 6 months. Total = ₹60,000. Zero extra.

The 'catch': It's not really a catch — but you need the right credit card. Debit card EMIs often don't qualify. You need the specific bank card that the merchant has partnered with. And your credit limit gets blocked for the EMI amount.

Which banks have the widest No Cost EMI coverage?

HDFC Bank: Widest acceptance — Amazon, Flipkart, Apple, Samsung, Croma, Vijay Sales, Reliance Digital, Myntra, Nykaa and most major retailers. ICICI Bank: Second widest — similar to HDFC with strong presence on Amazon and Flipkart. Axis Bank: Strong on Flipkart, Axis Bank EMI portal, Croma. SBI Card: Wide acceptance, especially online. Kotak Bank: Selective — strongest on Amazon.

Which card within a bank? Almost any credit card from these banks qualifies. Premium cards sometimes get longer tenures (9, 12 months). Debit cards are usually excluded from No Cost EMI — check specifically.

Smart rules for using No Cost EMI

Rule 1: Only buy something you were going to buy anyway. No Cost EMI doesn't make a bad purchase decision good. Rule 2: Track your total EMI obligations — don't let them exceed 30-40% of your monthly income. Rule 3: Never miss an EMI payment — late payment converts to high-interest standard EMI and damages your CIBIL score. Rule 4: Use a separate credit card for large EMI purchases so you don't confuse it with monthly spending.

One underrated use: Buy the 256GB model instead of 128GB using No Cost EMI. The difference is ₹10,000 split over 6 months = ₹1,667/month — negligible. You get 2x storage for minimal monthly impact.
